Max Cavalera may have sung on Arise standout “Dead Embryonic Cells” that we were all born into a “condemned future,” but his Brazilian band’s fourth full-length made it clear that the group’s musicianship, at least, was on an upward trajectory. Even across a legendary catalogue, there still may be no greater thrill than the precision punishment of the opening title track’s lead riff. While peppered with in-miniature moments of industrial experimentation and tribal drumming — both tangents to be explored further in Sepultura’s future — Arise is the last primarily thrash-based record of the Cavalera era, and it’s a ripper par excellence.
