Product Description
Ford used a stamped steel fan shroud with the first Model As but elected to abandon the part in November 1928 and inventory was worked through by February - March 1929. radiators manufactured at the Ford plant would have the fan shroud but Long, Flintlock and McCord produced radiators were added in July of 1929 are less likely to have installed the shroud.
Why use a fan shroud? Fans pull air over the fin's surface. In the absence of a fan shroud they also pull air from everywhere. A properly designed fan shroud encloses the core are and limits the drawn air to the core's rear face area thus maximizing the effects of continually exposing the source (hot fin) to the sink (the air).
Some have theorized that Ford ceased supplying the part as a cost saving effort and conventional wisdom holds that at speeds less than ~38mph, this hand formed steel fan shroud is your best friend.
Given the number of parade vehicles and slow cruising tour cars we help restore, we have added a made-in-the-USA steel shroud to our offering for those who don't want plastic.
Designing for the Aftermarket :
We design this to mount to the inside of the upper shell mounting bracket and the lower bracket hole aligns with a hole in the lower shell bracket. This hole is present in our manufactured radiators however, if you have an aftermarket radiator from another company, please advise us of this. The lower hole may not present and we will design to accomodate this.
