The inspiration for his lighting designs came from a visit to the Japanese fishing village of Gifu, where Noguchi observed fishermen at work. These fishermen not only trained cormorants for fishing but also used lanterns to attract fish. The lanterns featured bamboo ribs covered with delicate paper.
Drawing from the design of these traditional lanterns, Noguchi created his own light sculptures using wood and paper. For the CALIRA Floor Lamp, he chose mulberry tree paper, which softens the light, creating a gentle, evenly diffused glow.

Its careful production process—stripping, boiling, washing, and beating the fibers into pulp, then forming and drying the sheets on bamboo screens—results in paper that is remarkably strong yet softly translucent.
