JBL, or James B. Lansing Sound, Inc., is one of the most storied and prolific audio manufacturers in the world. Founded in 1946, JBL revolutionized how consumer audio products were designed, produced, and marketed. JBL was known for taking older driver designs and layouts from brands like General Electric and Western Electric, and modifying those designs to suit the needs of a rapidly growing post-WWII hifi market.
The sound produced by some of these early home systems is unlike anything else on the market today. JBL's drivers produce high-efficiency, impactful, and rich sound with a characteristic JBL signature. The compression drivers reproduce vocals and instruments with authority, but without harshness.
The JBL '030' home speaker system was available right around 1967 as a kit option for the intrepid DIY carpenter to try their hand at loudspeaker cabinet building. The '030' system was one of a series of options available with detailed blueprints to allow the purchaser to create a unique design all their own. The '030' system consists of the following components:
- D130 15" paper pulp cone, high-efficiency, low-frequency driver (16 ohm)
- 075 Ring Radiator, high-efficiency tweeter (16 ohm)
- N2400 2-way adjustable crossover
These speakers are stunning examples from the time. They are as efficient as advertised in the vintage JBL literature, being able to be powered by 8 watt per channel 300B amps or classic solid state McIntosh pieces as well. Just golden-age sound no matter what! The custom cherry cabinets were made by the Hillcraft Furniture Company to an exceptional standard. They exude mid-century elegance and are just gorgeous to look at and experience.
These speakers are a time capsule and will perform admirably for their new owner.
