Doyle was born in Dorchester, a Boston neighborhood, during the Great Depression to a large Catholic family struggling to survive. "Family Matters" is the story of how he faltered and then thrived. He went on to become a Destroyer officer, a newspaperman in Massachusetts and finally a national correspondent in Washington covering the aftermath of President Kennedy's assassination and every administration and presidential election through George H.W. Bush, sharing in a Pulitzer Prize and playing a key role during Watergate. He finished his career as executive editor of the news organization with the biggest staff covering the military and the Pentagon. He lives in Gaithersburg, MD where he teaches and writes.
